Har-Tru
Har-Tru is a unique tennis court surfacing material made from billion-year-old Precambrian metabasalt found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Hundreds of millions of years of geological development have resulted in a natural green stone that offers many advantages for tennis court surfacing. Although it is referred to as clay, Har-Tru is actually composed of this crushed stone, which is extremely hard and angular, two very important qualities when it comes to tennis court construction. The angularity helps the stone particles lock together to form a stable playing surface, and the hardness provides exceptional durability.
Har-Tru is more durable and more consistent than its European clay court counterparts, although the stone's natural green color is classically clay and instantly recognizable. The stone is crushed, screened, and mixed in the precise proportions necessary to produce a stable playing surface. It is then installed over a porous base of crushed stone aggregate, resulting in Har-Tru products.
The porous nature of the stone dries quickly after a rain and allows players to continue through a light rain. It is both cooler and easier on the body than hard courts. The surface reduces runoff and soil erosion, allowing Har-Tru installation in locations in which zoning restrictions prevent construction of other types of tennis courts. Har-Tru products are recommended for tennis courts with sprinkler systems.
